GHOST CHALLENGE

Race a previous run with Runome Ghost Challenge

A previous run can provide a concrete reference for another outing. Choose a suitable route and understand the comparison before treating its progress display as a verdict.

Choose a reference that fits the attempt

Runome's Ghost Challenge lets you use a previous performance as a reference. A usable recorded route is important: a summary containing only distance and duration cannot describe the same route-following comparison. The feature belongs to Runome Club.

Choose a reference whose route and direction fit the outing you intend to record. A faster previous activity on a different path is not automatically a useful opponent. Check the starting area and the recorded path rather than selecting solely by finish time.

Set up before recording

In the checked recording interface, Ghost Challenge is selected while the recorder is ready, before the attempt starts. Choose the available reference run and review the route. The app also provides a way to remove the selected Ghost before recording.

Illustrative reference-selection checks
QuestionWhy it matters
Is there a usable route? The comparison needs more than summary totals
Is the direction the same? The same loop can distribute terrain differently
Is the start comparable?A shifted starting point changes progress context
Were there pauses?Timing needs a consistent interpretation
Is the outing appropriate today?A previous result does not decide current circumstances

Keep the comparison and its conditions distinct

Imagine a reference loop completed in 30 minutes and a new recording completed in 29:40. The new total is 20 seconds quicker if the distances and clocks are comparable. That observation does not show that every section was faster or that conditions were identical.

Read any live progress indication as a comparison tied to the selected reference and available location data. Do not let an on-screen lead determine how you respond to crossings, route obstacles or your own condition. A personal challenge is still an activity taking place in the real world.

Review the completed pair

After saving, inspect the new activity against the reference in Runome. Check the distance, elapsed and moving-time context, available charts and route differences. State whether the improvement concerns the whole outing or a specific portion.

The numerical comparison guide shows how a faster total can coexist with a different heart-rate cost. Fair baselines helps select a reference. Friend challenges have a separate access rule, covered in the Free and Club guide; they should not be conflated with Ghost access.
